September is Fort Madison Heritage Month!
Mayor Matt Mohrfeld declared September as Fort Madison Heritage Month on August 20, 2024. Mohrfeld’s proclamation reads as follows:
“WHEREAS, the City of Fort Madison is a vibrant city with a rich history that has shaped its cultural and community identity; and
“WHEREAS, Fort Madison’s heritage is celebrated through momentous events and landmarks that date back to the early 1800’s; and
“WHEREAS, we are the home of the Tri-State Rodeo, which showcases the city’s deep connection to rodeo traditions and western heritage; and
“WHEREAS, the Mexican Fiesta, a colorful and festive celebration, highlights the diverse cultural influences that enrich our community and foster unity among its residents; and
“WHEREAS, the historic railroads that once traversed Fort Madison played a pivotal role in the development and growth of the city, symbolizing the industrious spirit and progress of the region; and
“WHEREAS, the Mississippi River, a majestic and vital waterway, has been central to Fort Madison’s history, economy, and recreational activities, shaping the city’s landscape and heritage.
“NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that I, Matt Mohrfeld, Mayor of Fort Madison, do hereby proclaim the month of September as ‘Fort Madison Heritage Month.’
“This month is dedicated to honoring and celebrating the diverse elements of our city’s history and culture.
“During this month, I encourage all residents to take this opportunity to recognize and participate in the events and traditions that define Fort Madison and to reflect on our shared heritage with pride.”
